Sudden, but not unexpected

The Destash blog owner's have decided to close up shop, (understandably), with a notice to the public and a group email to the members. There were several immediate responses to that email .

There's been a new blog started on WordPress, but I haven't seen anyone posting yet. There was a reply from the owner of For the Love of Yarn on-line magazine, offering their free classified ads. And, I suppose, there's always Ebay, though somehow that seems big and scary to me. I can post here, but traffic on this site has never really been high without a lead in from somewhere else.

There was a fair bit of commerce being conducted on that original site. I wonder where it's going to go? As for me, yes, I've still got a lot more to go through (Campion anyone?) but I'm not in that great of a hurry that I can't wait and see what starts getting posted where over the next few days.

Housecooling distractons

After a week involving food poisoning (nuff bout that), this past weekend was the last time I will split my time between Himself's place and mine, and, baring unforseen incident, the last time I will be in that house in Lexington. His packers and movers do their work on Tuesday and Wednesday and his closing is on Friday. It's a lovely house and I'm sure the new family will enjoy raising their girls in the right school there. Even if they're having contractors in ASAP to start changing things around. End of an era.

Himself had a housecoooling for his close friends Saturday and for that I was willing to forgo the WKIP day for one year. A certain young lady with a similar birthday to ours (separated by slightly less than 4 decades) took one last dip in the pool in the rain. Cupcakes and veggies and chips and dip were enjoyed.

The sofa was picked up by friends of mine Friday and I'm hoping it's as excellent a napping space in her new place as it was there.

The two things left to unload to new owners are a computer monitor and a pair of relatively small stereo speakers from the time before Dr. Bose and his ilk determined you could get the same job done with far less volume. These two are about knee high to me and might double as precarious seating or as lampstands/end tables. I'm amused that the sound is described as "slightly wooly." This from the man whose family discusses symphony seasons like office jocks discuss sports teams. On the other hand, once at the event (having stood in line for rush tickets usually) they tend to fall asleep and sometimes snore.

Saturday, he sets off on a road trip to parts mostly undetermined other than south of here and I get to work on getting myself ready to move. Let's hope the Destash blog has resolved its posting problems.

Anyone in the 021XX zip code, free on the first Sunday in August. willing to heft a few boxes in return for refreshment, please raise your hand. An Evite will be issued soon.

In other news, Audible has two Yarn Harlot books available. Yup, it sounds like her and it's fun to hear the text in the author's voice. One comment, you may want to increase the volume on your listening device slightly above that for other narrators.

And, just to note, yesterday I drove a car for the first time in several years. Himself need to get the rather nice rugs, wine and his-sized bicycle down to the friend storing them for him (you don't send them to the climate-uncertain storage of the moving company) for the duration. He was worried that it's a stick. I'm not, I've never driven anything other than a stick (they started me out on a Mercedes 220 D -- power nothing), but I've lost my sense of how to tell how far the car boundaries are from other things in space. But it was just down MA Ave and there was a handy bus a couple cars in front of me to make those who really wanted to go faster head around anyway, so no one was pushing my tail. No stalling, no peeling out, nothing hit and no shouting, that I heard. But it did point out to me that before I ever head out on the highway again, I want a defensive driving course for practice first.

This week will be more distractions, but it's all the in the name of progress.

Transition time coming

We went up to Loon for the Granite State Knit In this weekend. As usual, it was a great event. 16 years, and they note their mailing list is 600 and they have capacity for only 150 people. I'm glad they keep inviting me to teach each year, if for nothing else that it guarantees I get in the door.

Both classes went well. The Entrelac students were well prepared, and the Deciphering Yarn Substitution had a good discussion, as I intended. I need to work on how to lead a discussion, without hogging the conversation so much, but then again, I was the one who had done the research and therefore I should expect to have most of the speaking to do.

Anna Zilboorg was a good, if bemused, speaker -- grateful for the interest, but not really interested in self-promotion. Folks seemed disappointed she had brought nothing to sell. When questioned, she spoke about the life of an Anglican Solitary, what it entails and what it doesn't. She gave a plug for Loran Block of Snow Star Farms and her colors hand-dyed yarns, but unfortunately they don't have a website to link to. I've lost touch with Loran in the last several years, and it would be good to get back in touch, but it will probably have to wait until after the move.

We came back to start the last two weeks Himself has in the house he's been in since the early 90's, when the late Missus and he bought it, got married and renovated extensively for three years. It's time to move on, and he's been planning this for about a year and a half, but now that it's so close to happening, it's bittersweet. Next weekend will be the last weekend in the house. A number of things are packed, there are more things to be sold/given away (anyone interested in nice armchairs with matching ottomans?), and after the closing he's going to head off on a trip for a few weeks until the closing on the new place in July. Thanks to Two Sock Knitters and their tales of their eastern roadtrip, he knows where to find contra-dance community in North Carolina.

More destashing will happen in the next few weeks. Not sure exactly when, but it will be soon.

Armload for the Post Office

Last night was another fairly successful night on the Destash blog. Most everything sock-yarnish I posted has sold. One knitter who bought laceweight last month asked if there was any left (yes, and she bought more).

The Sockotta and Lamb's Pride Worsted still isn't attracting any interest, though. Eh, after all, there was something that drew me to buy so much sock yarn in the first place myself.

Surprizing how much time the destashing takes up, though. There's the compulsion to check email frequently, actually sometimes a necessity, given the speed at which requests come in and people eager to hear if they get dibs on the item. Then there's the replying to those who did, and didn't get the item, answering questions, dealing with people who want to set their own terms.

It leaves very little time for actual knitting......

That went fast!

Earlier this evening I posted (with the usual trouble -- takes slightly less than forever and God forbid you want to delete your autosaved drafts afterwards) the Lorna's Laces collection of Shepherd Sock off the sock weight shelf. I've still got plenty of Kroy (4 and 3 ply), Socka of various flavors and pounds (easily pounds) of Regia. After that, I get to open the closed basket of sock yarn and see what's bursting out of there.

Within minutes there was a flurry of interest and in the space of an hour, money collected for 3 out of 5 colorways on offer -- and all interested. Himself was most impressed. I'm headed for the post office tomorrow.

Makes me wonder what will happen in June when I start making decisions about the Campion in the closet. Then again, no one has bitten on the Sockotta nor the Lamb's Pride Worsted, yet. Eh, I knew I was invested in yarn futures.

In other news, I've finished cataloging the swath of swatches for the Deciphering Yarn Substitution class next weekend, and mostly have my bibliography in order. Everything seems to have come out larger after blocking than before and some definitely suffered even being handwashed. But, that's part of the exercise.

Life is better now that I've gotten that out of the way. It's been fun working on real projects again. I have a series of shawlettes out of hand-dyed sock weight going on. Last Tuesday I finished the blue/green one (Dusk colorway?) and got started on the Northern Lights colorway.

Not yet shown, a co-worker's wife is due in June and, ya know, when you don't work with the mother it's easy to loose track of how soon the baby gift will be needed. Pictures after it's done and given, but I'm through the straight body and about to start the sleeve increases on a Baby Nalgar in the black with brights Sockotta. I'm relieved after using Sockotta in baby gifts over the years that it was one of the yarns that behaved well in blocking. Some yarns knit up so nicely and then looked and felt terrible once they were even hand washed.
